The Brain Rocks and Swirls

This 100-acre section contains the most recognizable geological features at White Pocket.

You will spend most of your time exploring these central Navajo sandstone formations. The stone has eroded into complex patterns, requiring about 1.5 to 3 miles of walking to see everything.

Because there are no marked trails, you are free to wander across the slickrock. Wear sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles to navigate the uneven surfaces safely.

Vast sections of white Navajo sandstone are cracked into polygonal shapes. The texture closely resembles human brain tissue. Visit this area during early morning or late afternoon. The low light emphasizes the deep shadows inside the rock cracks.

The Water Pockets

30 minsStay out of pools

These natural depressions in the rock hold rainwater after storms. This feature originally gave White Pocket its name. Do not step in the pools to protect rare desert plants and animals. Instead, use the puddles to capture reflection photos of the surrounding formations.
